May I introduce myself?

Hi! My name is Gian Martina; I am 50 years old Dutch man and have been living in beautiful Portugal with my partner since April 2025.
We enjoy the stunning nature here, the fresh air of the beautiful surroundings, and the magnificent views across the rugged mountains of the Serra da Freita. The Paiva River flows through the valley, offering plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. In the immediate vicinity of our village, Alvarenga, there are ample opportunities for hiking—whether along ancient Roman roads near the Ponte 516 or through forests fragrant with eucalyptus trees.
Walking and hiking have always been my passion—from the Samaria Gorge in Crete and the Blue Mountains in Australia to multi-day treks in China. Here in Portugal, my partner and I head into the mountains to hike almost every Sunday.
At the end of 2022, I experienced burnout. What began as total exhaustion turned into the start of a valuable turning point. Through mindfulness, I learned to slow down, breathe consciously, and be truly present again. This not only restored my energy but also gave me the courage to launch my own business in early 2023.
With Inner Spirit Hikers, I want to combine these experiences: introducing people to mindful hiking in an accessible and playful way. My goal is for them, too, to find more peace, focus, and joy in every step. The complete Inner Spirit Hikers program consists of five hikes, each with a different theme. You will learn to hike using improved techniques, better breathing, and a greater focus on the here and now.
What is mindful walking?
Mindful walking means walking in nature consciously and with full attention. It is not an ordinary walk, but a conscious practice that centers on your body, breathing, and senses.
Instead of dwelling on the past or the future, you are fully present in the here and now. Each step becomes a moment of connection with yourself and your surroundings.
Key techniques we use:
• Walking Technique & Grounding – Proper walking technique and posture help you connect more deeply with yourself and the earth beneath you. (Inner Root)
• Conscious Breathing & Relaxation – Calm, deep, and rhythmic (nasal) breathing synchronized with your steps brings relaxation to body and mind. (Inner Flow)
• Focus & Concentration – Actively listening, observing, smelling, feeling, and tasting. Conscious awareness anchors you in the here and now. (Inner Presence)
• Letting Go & Trusting – Consciously releasing thoughts and tension, and daring to let yourself be guided by another. (Inner Surrender)
• Play & Integration – Dare to let go. Use the techniques you’ve learned in a playful way to reconnect with yourself whenever needed. (Inner Child)
By practicing these techniques regularly, you train your ability to become calmer, more present, and more resilient—both while walking and in your daily life.
